New research indicates that patients who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals purchasing these drugs should be cognizant of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a return to original weight within about one and a half years.
Weighing Treatments
The analysis, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically have a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Doctors suggest the mechanism of the injections accounts for the heightened rebound.
These medications copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this medication leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."
A Lifelong Issue?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have come off the medication report a intense resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a switch activating and you become extremely hungry," recalled one woman.
This challenge is compounded if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Interest
Figures show that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among females than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers stress that while the jabs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success relies on integrated behavioural management.
