At least 13 passengers perish and 98 injured in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship government projects.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the head of state.

The president confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term concluded the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's strategic vision for the southeastern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The development of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, beating forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised persistent apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This pause was suggested until the completion of a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "demands swift accountability."

In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been operating in total adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these vital initiatives.
